Providing a Plant Stanol/Sterol that Helps Decrease Dietary Absorption of Cholesterol
High Priority Post: A general idea I have for the utilization of donation funds from The Dietetic Wellness Project within the next 3 years is to purchase a bulk supply of a plant stanol / sterol supplement that is an evidenced based Nutrition Intervention to help lower / manage cholesterol levels caused by eating diets high in cholesterol. for patients with a genetic history of familial hypercholesterolemia, I will be educating them that this supplement does not replace the importance of a Statin (or other medication) to lower cholesterol because it will not help decrease the cholesterol that is produced naturally by the human body.
Supplement being Considered for Charity Donation -
Plant Stanol / Sterol
The supplements would be stored on a shelf in my outpatient office. I would offer patients products during Outpatient MNT appointments. All products distributed must not have the seal broken for safety standards to be upheld in this project.
I would receive no paid promotion for purchasing the products in bulk for my patients.
As of April 2026, a Community Needs Assessment has not been conducted yet for this patient donation project idea in Eastern Washington.
Hospital directors / admin would need to approve of my Project Master Plan which includes a Community Needs Assessment and storage plans before any money would be taken out of a business checking account to purchase the supplements in bulk.
The plant stanol / sterol supplement selected in the Community Needs Assessment will need to have a Risk/Benefit Report written about it if the supplement chosen for distribution is not USP certified. It is the duty of the Executive Director (Myself) to write this Risk/Benefit Report if it is decided that a non-USP certified supplement would be the best choice for distribution to patients.
Patients would be screened for drug nutrient interactions and the results documented in their EHR before being cleared to receive the plant stanol / sterol supplement available for distribution via donation from my office.
