This 8 page journal article was written in Seoul Korea based off of clinical pediatric experience in a Korean University Hospital.
The Sections are: Introduction, Methods of Nutritional Intervention, History and Definition of EN, Indications & Contraindications of EN, Sites & Modes of Delivery, Types & Methods of EN by Enteral Access, Complications of EN, & Conclusion.
There are 2 very useful diagrams to take note of in this publication ( Figure 1 & Table 2 ). Figure 1 is a decisional flowchart created to help Clinical Nutritionists make the best site placement for EN Support in pediatric patients. Table 2 lists specific guidelines under patient age ranges based on Bolus or Continuous feedings for different initial feed volumes of EN Support, advancement of ENT mL per feed, & suggested tolerance volumes mL/Kg. This article provides great summarized intervention strategies for pediatric patients; more specific nutrition intervention thresholds reported for pediatric patients 0-6 yrs old.
This article is a great addition to a RDNs/RDs electronic library of clinical guidelines who are actively employed in Clinical Nutrition; Whether Inpatient or Home Enteral Nutrition Support, it's never a bad idea to have a handy resource on you with beautifully summarized diagrams of evidence based specific EN support guidelines for pediatric patients.
