Plant Stanol/Sterol Supp. Example Patient Education Sheet

2-3 g/day of plant stanols/sterols is an evidenced based Nutrition Intervention for High Cholesterol related to poor nutrition through dietary choices. inadequate dietary fiber intake, overconsumption of meat, and inadequate vegetable intake are all possible dietary patterns that are related to the development of Non-Genetic Hypercholesterolemia. Some studies have shown that dedicated consumption of 2-3 g/day of plant stanols/sterols can lower Cholesterol by as much as 10% in 2-3 weeks. This works by inhibiting Cholesterol absorption in the digestive tract before it reaches the bloodstream.

It is important to note that if a patient has a family history of high cholesterol the RDN/RD, or other nutrition professional, should recommend that the patient follow a statin regimen that has been prescribed by a Specialist or the patient's PCP. Intensive Dietary Intervention that severely limits the amount of dietary cholesterol eaten can cause an over-production of cholesterol naturally in the human body in patients who have Genetic Hypercholesterolemia. 2-3 g/day of plant stanols/sterols is still a recommended Nutrition Intervention in those who have Genetic Hypercholesterolemia.

Patients deserve the opportunity to receive an educational handout that shows an example of a reliable brand of supplement that is more easily available at chain stores.

This educational handout is available in both English & Spanish and is not a paid advertisement for Now's Beta-Sitosterol Plant Sterols. Now's Beta-Sitosterol Plant Sterols supp. was used in the patient education sheet because it is a mid-range priced plant stanol/sterol supp. that is available for online purchase and is stocked on the shelves of many American grocery stores, pharmacies, & health food stores.

No money is generated from the QR Code scans to the Dietetic Wellness website. The QR Code is included so that patients can view more educational resources online and can have the website saved on their mobile device so that they can refer to these PDFs on the Clinical Blog if they accidentally lose/misplace the handout that was given to them during the appointment. A healthcare professional can help the patient scan the QR Code if the patient is not familiar with this process so that the patient has access to the digital PDF before leaving the healthcare facility.

Thank you for taking the time to view this Patient Education Resource!

Sincerely,

Ms. Samantha Walton, RDN MS Nutrition, Executive Director & Sole Member Founder/Incorporator of The Dietetic Wellness Project, Sole Creator/Designer of the Dietetic Wellness Website
