Added Sugar Fact Sheet

Giving patients a fact sheet that lists other names for added sugar on a Nutrition Label's Ingredients List streamlines nutrition education centric about added sugar in beverages / processed food. The Spanish PDF of this fact sheet has the words listed in both English and Spanish so that patients can identify English words for added sugar on American English Nutrition Labels. In my experience, when people know what to look for on an Ingredients List, patients start paying attention to how many sugar products are added in their processed food / drink.
This sheet, partnered with a complimentary education about the quantity/type of added sugars in sugar sweetened beverages / processed foods, is a great educational intervention for patients who are in the Pre-Contemplation / Contemplation / Preparation / Action Transtheoretical stages of behavior change. Allowing an Outpatient/Inpatient the opportunity to view this fact sheet gives the patient the opportunity to decide if they're immediately willing to switch from Pre-Contemplation to the Contemplation stage of behavior change after learning about all the sources of added sugar that can be found in the Nutrition Label's Ingredients List.
It should be viewed as a success to document in medical charting if the patient is offered this fact sheet and accepts it knowing that the goal is to decrease consumption of added sugar in beverages and/or processed foods.
I hope you find these patient education materials useful; if you do end up using them I would love to read a comment about how you found them useful!
Enjoy!
