The Patient Education Sheets are brightly colored, full of visuals of food, and list a quick explanation of how to use Phosphate Binders; this Patient Education Sheet is for Visual Learners with CKD who don't want a 30 minute explanation of when and how to effectively use their Phosphate Binder and what type of foods are best practice to limit with CKD stage 4 & 5.
This Patient Education Sheet can help Clients / Patients with Advanced CKD identify meals / snacks that contain a high amount of P (Phosphorous), K (Potassium), and which meals / snacks cause or worsen inflammation. The backside of this handout explains when to take a Phosphate Binder and lists other helpful tips / tricks about how and when to use a Phosphate Binder. Many people experiencing Advanced CKD choose to consume high P meals / snacks; encouraging / teaching someone about how to use a Phosphate Binder should be considered essential Nutrition Education to help preserve bone health in Patients / Clients with CKD or ESRD (requiring dialysis). Advanced CKD patients who do not successfully moderate their P & K intake are at risk to developing Metabolic Bone Disease (MBD). MBD is a debilitating condition that can also cause open sores and increase the rate of skin breakdown on patients that have lost mobility and/or lost range of motion due to significant bone pain. Increased development of Decubitus Ulcers (Pressure Sores) can also increase a Patients risk of developing Sepsis while trying to recover from a Bone Fracture. Patients who develop MBD are at risk of experiencing frequent fractures.
4 free PDFs are available in this Clinical Post. 2 PDFs in English / Spanish use real-life PNG examples of Processed Food Products so that the Patient can compare what they purchase at a grocery or convenance store to the Patient Education Sheet. The other 2 PDFs in English / Spanish use cartoon depictions of Processed Food Products. The foods have been conglomerated on the front side of the sheet based on their mod to high P (Phosphorous) level, mod to high K (Potassium) level, and by which foods cause / worsen inflammation. These PDFs are Telehealth Friendly and can be used in discharge planning if a Patient has been hospitalized because of a CKD related condition / illness / disease.
Processed Mashed Potatoes have been listed on this sheet because Mashed Potatoes are generally eaten with other processed food items as toppings that can worsen Inflammatory related diseases. Listing Mashed Potatoes on this sheet gives the Healthcare Professional the opportunity to explain to a patient how to prepare health promotional Mashed Potatoes for Advanced CKD. This is especially true for Patients that prepare Mashed Potatoes with Dairy Products like milk. To decrease the P (Phosphorous) content of Mashed Potatoes Patients can be educated to use water or a Milk substitute other than Soy Milk. Almond Milk is a good Dairy Product substitute to recommend to Patient's with Advanced CKD who enjoy Cooking / Baking with Cow's Milk. Unsweetened Unfortified Almond Milk is the safest Baking / Cooking Cow's Milk substitute for Patient's experiencing Advanced CKD to protect them from developing MBD.
The cartoon English / Spanish Patient Education Sheets will be available on the Nonprofit Corporations Zazzle 501c(3) Charity Merchandise store on a 24X36 Foam Board in a soft natural light green color and a dark hunter green color that can be used in clinics or in Healthcare Professional's private offices.
